Information for study participants
The participants in the study will make a major contribution to improving the determination of kidney function in the elderly. To this end, they are examined and questioned every two years and give a blood and urine sample.
In January 2018, the study enters the fifth round.

Selection of the Study participants
Your insurance company chose a random sample of people who are at least 70 years old. These persons got an invitation letter to participate in BIS. You might received one.
As soon as you had decided whether you would like to have your kidneys checked with us, we arranged an appointment with you at the study site of your choice. Maybe you have already participated at our two years' follow-up visit, too.
Development of the Study over time
In June 2011 we had reached our recruitment goal and enrolled 2070 participants into the Berlin Initiative Study. We want to thank all our participants for their outstanding commitment!
In the meantime we have conducted between December 2011 and September 2013 our first two years' follow-up visit. Within this visit we interviewed all the participants again and took blood and urin samples. We are fortunate to say, that the majority of our study participants came back to see us again (88% of the participants still alive).
In fall 2017 we were able to look back on a course of six years of Berlin Initiative Study. This means that important data is now available over a period of six years. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our participants!
In 2018 we have started the next round and hope that as many as possible will again participate.
Join us for the fifth round!
Since January 2018 the fifth round is ongoing
In case you feel too frail to visit one of our study sites we offer that our staff will visit you at home. The longer the course of obervation the better the interpretation of results. This holds true for the individual participant as well as the whole study population.
